Ghibli Museum is a must-visit if you’re in Tokyo. Their exhibits are nothing like the ones in conventional museums.
As the museum of a world-renowned animation studio, Ghibli Museum definitely exceeds expectations. Famed for their animated films such as “Spirited Away” and “My Neighbour Totoro”, almost every exhibit in the museum is animated, providing a magical air to the place.
Hayao Miyazaki is the Japanese equivalent of Walt Disney, but with a more theatrical flair.
Fan or not, you will enjoy the Ghibli Museum.

Sheila and I got our tickets from one of the Lawson convenience stores via a Loppi machine for a very low price of ¥1000 each. We were extremely fortunate to have a Tokyo-based Malaysian friend to help us because we didn’t understand Japanese at all, as a Japanese name and phone number are required when purchasing tickets from Loppi machines.
Tickets sell out very fast, so it’d be wise to purchase them a week before your visit.
We were fortunate to get our tickets on the last day we were in Japan because all earlier dates were sold out.

I don’t want to ruin the surprise of the museum’s exhibits, where visitors are free to roam and discover as much as they can at their own pace, so I’ll leave you with my outdoor photos.
Photography isn’t allowed indoors, which for the very first time, I agree with because it really is a place that you just have to be there to experience it all.

The Straw Hat Cafe is a must-visit too, where every item is organic (even their straws are made of real straw). I asked the waitress about the special illustrated bottles, and she told me that it’s the beer that they sell from the take-away kiosk.
Minutes later, she returned with an empty bottle for each of us to take home for free. Again, I’m blown away by Japanese hospitality.
We flew home to Malaysia later that night, and swore to come back again soon.
Cannot wait for next March!
