Kuromon Market in Osaka is a must-visit for fresh produce food including seafood, sashimi, sushi, kobe beef, fugu (also known as the potentially deadly blowfish) etc. A lot of Japanese chefs and restaurateurs source their ingredients here, and it’s not hard to see why. Everything is fresh and big, so no skimping on quality here. Although a lot smaller than Kyoto’s Nishiki Market, Kuromon market is packed with wonderful Japanese food and produce.

We decided to have an early lunch at Lunch Box Story, and imagine our delight when the cook started speaking to us in Bahasa Indonesia (similar to Bahasa Malaysia), albeit with a heavy Japanese accent. It’s a small world, indeed. I do suggest having a small lunch as there are a lot more to eat in the market.

Kuromon Market is also filled with stalls selling snacks and treats like yakitori and ice-cream. One of our favourites are Japanese strawberries. Strawberries in Japan are huge in size, and as shown above, the biggest ones retail for ¥300 each (almost RM10). They are exorbitantly priced, but worth every penny as they are the sweetest, juiciest strawberries you will ever taste. Cheryl has always raved about Japanese strawberries, and has gotten us hooked as well. And how clever is it to categorise melons according to grade with colourful bows?

There are a handful of florists at Kuromon Market as well, and we spent the longest amount of time at the biggest one. I have never seen so many flowers in my life. Ever. What a glorious sight.

Cheap food? Delicious snack stalls? Fresh seafood and sashimi? Kuromon Market has it all.
